Belinsk

[Castle:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beastman Guard 1: We saw...the shadow of the moon...and then the monsters were on us.

Beastman Guard 1: [SS] Monsters everywhere... Have to protect people... Can't really move, though...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beastman Guard 2: The horror... The horror...

Beastman Guard 2: [SS] I wanna go home.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Outside:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vande: The other members of the bad have all left town. I might be the only musician in Belinsk.

Vande: [SS] I guess everyone in the band is all right. Now, how can I help the townsfolk?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B01: Monsters! Here! What can it mean?

B01: [SS] More people might have made it if the monsters hadn't appeared so suddenly. No one was prepared...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B02: Eep! What do you want, furless? Leave me alone!

B02: [SS] Not that I'm complaining, but why have the monsters left me alone? Is something protecting me?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B03: I'm no soldier... I didn't have a weapon... What could I possibly have done?

B03: [SS] Stay out of the shadows... Stay out of the shadows... Stay out of the shadows...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B04: The morning light was too bright, so I tried to find some shade... I-I...I don't want to die...

B04: [SS] What...happened? I remember there was something moving in the shadows, and then...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B05: If you see a horrible shadow monster, don't panic. Remember, he's more afraid of you than you are of him.

B05: [SS] Just like with dogs, a stern word seems to make those monsters just lumber on past. I wonder if it helped that I was standing stock still, too frightened to move?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: The remains of some unfortunate soul.

B06: [SS] The city is in chaos! What happened?!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B07: The monsters! They...they... Honey?! Come on—we have to get out of here! Why won't you move?!

B07: [SS] I heard a scream outside and looked away... It couldn't have been more than a second. Then I heard a thump, and when I looked back, my darling wife...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: The remains of some unfortunate soul.

B08: [SS] Ahhhh... Nothing like a nice lie-down to relax you. Probably time to get up now... Why can't I move?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B15: I can't find my children!

B15: [SS] OK, before all the commotion, they were playing by the statue... Where are they now?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B17: I regret nothing... Fight bravely, King Volechek...

B17: [SS] If this is the end, I think I did OK for myself... I fought beside the king and freed Morgal from the Sanans... I helped out at that soup kitchen when I could... Polite to my elders... Yeah... Mission accomplished.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B26: They caught me off guard, and now...I have to pay for it.

B26: [SS] Looking back on my career as a soldier, I don't think I ever actually fought anyone... I stood guard, peeled a potato or two, cleaned the latrine... Nope! No actual soldiering. Huh.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B28: I couldn't even see the monsters... Everything went sort of fuzzy...

B28: [SS] I feel better than I have in years! My back doesn't hurt, and I'm more relaxed than I've ever felt!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Item shop:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belinsk Item Seller: [SS] Did the noise outside just get a lot more...panicky?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Inn:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belinsk Innkeeper: [SS] I can't put my finger on why, but something about these folks says "world saving" to me.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Healer's Place:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belinsk Healer: [SS] I wish I could do more than simply pray for the good of my people...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Weapon/Armor Shop:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belinsk Armor Seller: [SS] I wish I could just quit my job and run away to see the world... But who would take care of Mom?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Belinsk Weapon Seller: [SS] I've got a bad feeling about this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Belinsk Opera House

[If you go to the Opera House, the soldiers and the old man lay dead or dying.]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B16: My granddaughter! Where is she?!

B16: [SS] Please, Crystallux, watch over my granddaughter and keep her safe...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: The remains of some unfortunate soul.

Morgal Soldier 1: [SS] I guess you were right after all, Mom. I shouldn't have become a soldier...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: The remains of some unfortunate soul.

Morgal Soldier 2: [SS] Where did that girl go? I hope she's all right...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: The remains of some unfortunate soul.

Morgal Soldier 3: [SS] I wish I had two more lives to give for my country and King Volechek!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: The remains of some unfortunate soul.

Morgal Soldier 4: [SS] I thought I'd die on some glorious battlefield, not a gaudy opera house...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[When you approach the monster in the Opera House:]
Dark Devourer: GRAAAAH!

[The chandelier suddenly turns into a dragon and faces it.]

Dark Devourer: GRAAWR!

[The young woman was cowering behind the curtain but runs out to protect the dragon.]

Young Woman: Don't hurt it! Please don't hurt Crystallux!

[The monster strikes her and knocks her aside. Matthew jumps in to do battle. Once the Dark Devour and its minions are dead, the girl is still lying on the stage.]

Young Woman: I knew the dragon was real... I mean, I knew YOU were real... So we have to say good-bye now? But we just met!
Crystallux: Arroooo...
Young Woman: Please...take good care of this dragon.

[She dies.]

Crystallux: UROOR!
Text: The dragon seems to want to aid Matthew in his quest.
Text: Matthew can now summon Crystallux! To summon Crystallux, you need the following Djinn on standby: 3 Venus 2 Mercury

[Outside, they've buried the young woman and her grandfather. They even managed to get headstones.]

Kraden: Matthew, we should be going, and soon.

-Onward!-

Belinsk

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: Here lies a man grateful to have lived as long as he did.

B16: [SS] After all my years walking the earth, nothing could have prepared me for this nightmarish eclipse.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Text: Here lies a beloved wife and daughter.

Young Woman: [SS] At least I was buried near the opera house where I heard the music I loved...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[When you go to the docks:]
Kraden: Excellent! We've made it to the pier.
Tyrell: Can anyone explain to me what just happened? Did Belinsk, the impregnable fortress city, really just get invaded by monsters?
Amiti: They were everywhere! We could not walk five feet without being attacked by random creatures.
Eoleo: I can see a little village getting overrun like that, but a city this size? Not a chance.
Kraden: Apparently there was at least one chance.
Karis: Kraden, do you know what happened back there?
Kraden: I have a theory, yes.
Rief: Leave it to Kraden to develop an explanation while running from hordes of monsters...
Kraden: Ahem, yes. In any case, I believe the cause was the shadow created by Luna as it eclipsed Sol.

[They look at the top of the tower and the strange energy coming off the eclipse.]

Sveta: What does that have to do with anything?
Kraden: First of all, we are all in agreement that the monsters did not appear until dawn, correct? Once they did manifest, they appeared in the shadows, away from sunlight. Did you notice that?

Matthew: [Yes]
Karis: Of course you knew all along. Always one step ahead, eh, Matthew?
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
[NOTE: This line only appears if you select "No" with the A button:]
Karis: We all appreciate your bravery, Matthew, but charging into the next shadow you see is a bad idea.

(*Continuing*)

Kraden: At any rate, I conclude that the monsters appeared from the shadows cast at dawn. But there's more.
Amiti: Does it have something to do with Luna's influence?
Kraden: Yes. I theorize that the shadows Luna casts are gathering and concentrating evil energy into them.
Rief: And what is the relationship between the monsters and this evil energy?
Kraden: Well, we usually see monsters in the deep, dark places of the world, correct? Places rife with evil energy. These places strengthen monsters. And this eclipse, unlike natural darkness, radiates the same energy. Meaning, unfortunately, that not only are monsters out of their usual haunts now, but they are stronger.
Eoleo: So why do they hate the light?
Kraden: Light dispels the fell energies that these creatures feed on. It's painful and draining to them.
Amiti: And Belinsk is now a miasma of these dark and evil energies.
Sveta: Is my home lost, then?
Kraden: I'm afraid it may be. Everyone, look on Belinsk and remember it well. We may not see it again.

[They do. It still looks pretty awful there.]

Kraden: Sadly, that is not the end of the bad news... If I'm correct, the effect is not restricted to Belinsk.
Rief: What? How far will it reach?
Karis: Anywhere under the shadow of the eclipse, presumably...
Tyrell: Well, that's it then, right? It's the end of the world.
Kraden: Your father would be disgusted to hear you give up so quickly.
Tyrell: But... What can we possibly do?

[Kraden walks down the pier and stops near the gangplank to a ship. The others follow.]

Kraden: That ship...
Matthew: ?!
Karis: Is that Briggs's ship?
Tyrell: Ship? You mean that floating pile of junk over there?
Rief: It does appear a bit...aged.
Amiti: He must have had it repaired.
Sveta: Whose ship is this?
Eoleo: It's my dad's boat...I think. It looks a bit different since the repairs.

[Meanwhile, there's a shot that pans to Briggs lying on the deck.]

Matthew: !!
Karis: Look! That's Briggs! I'm sure of it!
Tyrell: That must be his ship, then.
Rief: Wait, are there monster on the ship?
Amiti: It appears so.
Sveta: Is something... happening?
Eoleo: Dad!

[Eoleo jumps on board.]

Matthew: ...
Karis: Eoleo?
Tyrell: What is he doing?
Rief: Eoleo, don't be a fool!
Amiti: No...
Sveta: What is happening?

[Monsters appear in front of Eoleo.]

Kraden: Eoleo will not survive. You'll have to save him, Matthew.

-Onward!-

[After the battle:]
Karis: Wait—where's Eoleo?

[They look around, and of course he's with Briggs]

Eoleo: Dad!
Kraden: I never imagined that this would be how Briggs would leave us. Truly, death is unpredictable.
Karis: Briggs docked his ship here to save us. It's not right that it’s going to cost him his life.
Tyrell: Yeah, the greatest pirate of the high seas should...I dunno, go down with the ship or something.
Rief: If we hadn't kept him waiting... If we'd gotten here sooner, he might have lived to grow old.
Amiti: I have painted all pirates with the same broad brush, and now I find I owe my life to one...
Sveta: This is all my brother's fault. How many lives have been lost now to his terrible mistake?

[They head toward them.]

Eoleo: How bad is it, Dad?
Briggs: I had a good run... Lived my life free... Answered to no man...
Eoleo: What're you talking about? You're too tough to let this be the end.
Briggs: Tell your mom I'm sorry to leave her alone...and take care of Champa for me...

[Briggs dies.]

Eoleo: Dad! NO!

[It "dramatically" fades out. We see them standing on the boat later. It looks like it's snowing.]

Tyrell: Brrr! It just keeps getting colder! How is it this cold in the summer? I can't wait to get back in the cabin.
Rief: Quit complaining. It's disrespectful.
Sveta: Even the weather has gone mad...
Amiti: Can this all be from the effects of the tower?

[Eoleo has a coffin they apparently had on the ship.]

Kraden: We are ready to begin. Eoleo, are you sure this is what you want?
Eoleo: Dad lived his life on the sea... This is how he'd want it. Dad, I-I wish I'd known you'd be gone so soon. Guess I thought I still had time... But I swear I'm going to make the ones who did this pay... However long it takes. So rest in peace, Dad. I've got it from here.

[The coffin is pushed in the water and cannons fire.]

Kraden: You are serious about that vow, aren't you, Eoleo?
Eoleo: Absolutely. I'm sticking with you guys until we can stop all this and get revenge for my old man. Besides, someone's got to pilot this ship for you.
Text: Eoleo joined your party.
Eoleo: So if that's all the talk for now, I'll get the ship ready to sail.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tyrell: Why are we still awake? None of us slept at all last night! You all do what you want, but I'm taking a nap.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rief: Kraden seems extremely preoccupied. Something about this ship must fascinate him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amiti: We are partly to blame for what has happened here, but I cannot imagine how to correct it. For the first time in my life, I feel entirely powerless.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Karis: Sveta's worried sick about her brother and won't leave the deck. I wish I could comfort her somehow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pirate 1: Looks like a blizzard's closin' in on us. If we don't move quicklike, the ice on the hull will do us in.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sveta: Where is Volechek? He's the mightiest warrior in Morgal—he has to have survived...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CP01: We don't need to sail or row this thing... Why am I even here?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pirate 2: Don't tell nobody, but we didn't repair the ship. We gave up, but the next time we looked, the ship was fixed! Oh, and it moves without oars or wind now. It's the strangest thing I ever seen...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kraden: Everyone said that Briggs's ship was essentially a floating wreck, but it seems remarkably seaworthy now. As talented as they are, I don't think even Port Rago's shipwrights could have done all this...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[If you try to leave the pier:]
Karis: We can't go back now. Turning back would endanger everyone. ...I'm sorry.

-Onward!-

Eoleo: We're ready to go. Time to push off?

Matthew: [Yes.]
Eoleo: Good. Go find yourself a seat, and we'll set sail.
[The scene continues below.]
--------------------------
Matthew: [No.]
Eoleo: Need more time to get things square? Fine. I'll be here. Just let me know when we can ship out.

(*Continuing*)

Unseen person: ROOOOWWWR!
Sveta: Volecheck... That howl came from near the tower! It was Volechek, I'm certain.

[The boat shoves off.]

Karis: Sveta...
Sveta: Volechek! VOLECHEK! Volechek...
Karis: Sveta, there's nothing you can do for him now. Come inside. It's cold out here...
Volecheck: [dis.] Sveta... Dear sister...
Sveta: Volechek!

[Volechek is standing at the top of Luna Tower.]

Volechek: Forgive me for being such a fool. Those Tuaparang scum used me, and I didn't see until it was too late.
Sveta: [off-screen] Of course I forgive you...

[He sends a blue sphere floating to her.]

Text: Sveta and party got the Blue Orb.
Volecheck: [off-screen] Take this. I stole it from Blados—hopefully you can use it as a weapon against the Tuaparang.
Sveta: Where are you going? You can't stay in Belinsk!

[The shot goes back to Volechek.]

Volechek: Where can I go but here?
Sveta: [off-screen] Come with us!
Volecheck: I am king of Morgal. I cannot leave our capital when my own misjudgment may have destroyed it.
Sveta: [off-screen] Then I will stay with you.
Volecheck: No, dear sister. I am the king, and you are the last of our line. My duty is to stay... Yours is to live.
Sveta: [off-screen] No! I refuse! Dock the boat and let me off!
Volechek: Good-bye, Sveta. I pray you live a long and happy life.

[He enters the tower. We see the ship again.]

Sveta: ...Good-bye, Volechek.

[The ship is shown in a storm at sea for a bit. Finally, we see all the boys sprawled on the deck.]

Tyrell: *yaaawn* So, I guess we made it? Between the monsters and the storm, I thought we'd had it.
Rief: We appear to be basically safe and sound.
Amiti: I confess I was hoping to wake up in the palace of Ayuthay... I suppose my old life was the dream, though.
Eoleo: Yeah, guess so. Kind of a rude wake-up call, eh?
Kraden: [off-screen] Ah, excellent. You are all awake at last.

[Kraden and Karis walk up from below-deck]

Karis: Sorry to interrupt, everyone, but we can't just lie around anymore. Get up!

[They begin getting up.]

Matthew: !!!
Tyrell: Oof. So stiff...
Rief: Ow...
Amiti: Are you certain we are ready?
Eoleo: Maybe not...but what else are we gonna do?
Sveta: [off-screen] Good morning, everyone.

[She walks up.]

Matthew: ...!
Tyrell: Oh, hey, Sveta.
Rief: I'm glad to see you're all right, Sveta.
Amiti: You look remarkably well, Sveta.
Eoleo: All right? You look like nothing happened! And hey—did you say it's time to get up? Do we know something?
[Sveta holds up the Blue Orb.]
Rief: Ah, is that the item that King Volechek threw to Sveta?
Amiti: He made it sound extremely important.
Tyrell: So what's the deal with it?
Kraden: At this point...we are still unsure what it is.
Matthew: ??
Tyrell: Wait a minute! I thought you knew everything, Kraden!
Rief: If Kraden can't identify it...
Amiti: I cannot believe it.
Eoleo: You're kidding, right?
Karis: ey—we only have the item itself to work with! It's not a lot to go on, you know!

Matthew:
Karis: Thanks for understanding, Matthew. It's nice to have a calm center of the storm.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: I'm sure Kraden appreciates your boundless confidence in his abilities...
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: I know everyone's upset at how little we know, but please just bear with us. OK, Matthew?
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: Anyone who thinks it's a scholar's job to know absolutely everything is clearly thinking with their hearts.

(*Continuing*)

Kraden: The item is obviously ancient and presumably valuable. But these facts don't explain anything. We also know that Volechek risked his life to keep it out of our enemies' hands. Volechek also described it as a "weapon," though it's still unclear what he meant.
Rief: So what do we do now?
Kraden: What have you learned while we were apart, Rief?
Rief: What have I learned...?
Kraden: Karis tells me that you've had quite the journey around the world before arriving in Belinsk. You've restarted Alchemy Machines and traversed Craggy Peak. I couldn't have done those things. Your accomplishments speak volumes of your determination as skill, as well as teamwork.
Rief: Yes, I suppose you're right...
Kraden: Ultimately, I study only the long past, which does nothing to answer questions on its own. So what will answer our questions? Your travels have granted you experience, the true knowledge.
Karis: You're saying we have to figure out what to do ourselves and can't wait for you to tell us.
Kraden: More or less. Though I certainly won't abandon you. Let's look for answers together.
Tyrell: Well, you know my vote is always for doing stuff, not sitting around talking about it.
Kraden: And that may actually be our wisest course.
Tyrell: Really?!
Kraden: Indeed. Sometimes the surest path to knowledge is simply to start moving.

Matthew:
Kraden: I see that Matthew agrees with this approach. Excellent!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Kraden: That's the spirit! We will certainly prevail with such enthusiasm on our side!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Kraden: Don't worry, Matthew. Most of the great discoveries began with less to go on than we have!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Kraden: I know you're upset that I don't have all the answers, but all we can do is keep moving.

(*Continuing*)

Amiti: So are we done with this discussion?
Kraden: Almost. I did want to bring up that the tower's activation seemed to have been somehow preset eons ago.
Sveta: That's what that Ward machine in the tower said too.
Karis: Somehow the ancients knew we were coming, like a prophecy.
Amiti: That masked man claimed this was only the beginning.
Rief: Yeah, Arcanus also said we'd meet again, and soon.
Unlabeled speech bubble to the sky: "But know this—opening the seal on this dread machine was only the beginning." "I look forward to our next meeting. Until then, farewell."
Karis: That's what he said.
Kraden: Hmm...I suspected as much. Up until now, we have done exactly as our enemies have expected.
Eoleo: Yeah, we've been a step behind the whole way...even Dad. I'm gonna make them pay for that, though.
Kraden: I think it's fair to say you'll have your chance, Eoleo. You've led well to this point, Matthew, so I see no reason to change that arrangement.
Tyrell: Yeah, Matthew's gotten the job done so far!
Rief: I'll keep following you.
Amiti: I would follow no other.
Eoleo: You've got a good head on your shoulders, kid.
Kraden: If we're all agreed, let's go. And while I defer to your leadership, Matthew, I have one suggestion: we will learn most about the eclipse if we can find some land that overlaps its edge and see if from the outside. We should also talk to local leaders. From kings to village chieftains, any might know something useful.

[Fade to black, then it cuts to just Matthew and Sveta.]

Sveta: You should also know, Matthew, that my Spirit Sense can look into people's hearts. You may find it useful, so don't hesitate to ask me to use it.

[Fade to black, cut to a World Map shot of the boat.]

Eoleo: It's finally time to get moving! Since you're the new captain, you'll need to know how to get on and off the ship. To get off the ship, head for a beach or dock and sail right into it. To get back on, just walk back into the ship wherever it's waiting for you. So if you see a beach somewhere, it's probably worth checking out. You get all that?

Matthew: [Yes]
Eoleo: Great! I'll wait for your orders, Captain.
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Eoleo: All right, I'll explain it one more time, but listen up this time...Captain.
[He goes over the tutorial again.]
