Kolima Forest

[Outside:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KF01: It's good to be back to work again, but the voices from the forest sure are spooky.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[When you jump on the leaves:]
Pewter: [off-screen] Hey, you made it! I owe Laurel five coins.

[Pewter appears right behind them. They're surprised.]

Pewter: Hey, easy does it, big fella! Looks like you're gonna burst something there.
Tyrell: What do you expect when you just pop out of nowhere like that?!
Pewter: Please. THAT got you all hot and bothered? Not much of a warrior, are you?
???: [off-screen] Pewter, I have warned you about being polite to guests.

[They’re now surprised by the mystery voice.]

???: [off-screen] My deepest apologies. You have not traveled all this way to listen to Pewter's nonsense.

[They look up and see a giant face on a nearby tree.]

Laruel: If I may introduce myself, I am Laurel, a guardian of this forest.
Karis: You're...a...talking tree?
Laurel: Ahem. I am usually referred to as a "holy tree." On my better days, even a "tree of wisdom."
Rief: Astonishing... To meet a holy tree in the...flesh?
Amiti: A tree of wisdom? We have legends of such in Ayuthay. Are you familiar with the tale of the enlightened lark?
Laurel: Indeed I am. The lark in question perched in my branches for a time on his path to understanding.

[Amiti bows to the ground.]

Amiti: I apologize for not recognizing you, Elder Laurel. I am Amiti. It is a great honor to meet you, holy one.
Tyrell: Pssst! Amiti! What are you doing?
Amiti: We are in the presence of an enlightened entity! Bow your heads!
Tyrell: Did Amiti just call the tree "holy one"?
Rief: Yeah, I think he did. Does he think Laurel is some sort of priest or god?
Laurel: Do please raise your head, Amiti. I am no divinity, and the last thing I need is someone praying to me. I understand that to your relatively short-lived species, the Waelda can seem godlike. I also can see how from your point of view, a talking plant would be...novel. I prefer to think of us as beings whose long lives allow us to gather a share of the world's knowledge.
Amiti: I must respectfully disagree. The qualities you describe are the very essence of divinity.
Pewter: What part of "I'm not a god" do you not understand, fishbrain?

[Amiti finally stands because he's mad at Pewter.]

Laurel: That's enough, Pewter. I apologize again for Pewter. I also must thank you for what you've done for the Dream Tree. If you had not intervened, I am certain that Sludge would have destroyed it. Poor Sludge deserves some sympathy as well, though. His home was destroyed around him.
Tyrell: Is that why you didn't fight it? You felt sorry for the lizard thing?
Pewter: Hey, if Laurel and the others had been healthy, Sludge wouldn't have stood a chance.
Karis: Healthy? Is Laurel sick?
Pewter: Injured. Waelda take a while to heal, and Laurel's still hurt from 30 years ago when the thing happened.
Rief: The "thing"? You mean the Golden Sun?
Laurel: Yes. Pewter isn't one for details. But let us return to the matter at hand: is there some way I can repay you?
Tyrell: Um, Matthew? D'you think we can just ask a holy tree for the feather?
Laurel: Feather?
Karis: Er, yes. We came to Kolima looking for a feather from a Mountain Roc.
Laurel: What for, if I may ask?
Tyrell: I sort of broke a soarwing, and Matthew's dad, Isaac, said we had to get a new feather for it.
Laurel: Did you say "Isaac"?!
???: [off-screen] What about Isaac?!

[They’re surprised at this new voice and turn to see another tree has a face.]

Laurel: Ah, awake at last, Tret.
Matthew: ?!
Karis: Tret! Is that you?
Tyrell: Tret is ugly...
Rief: So this is Tret...
Amiti: Another tree of wisdom...
Tret: Yes, yes, I'm Tret. Who are all of you?
Laurel: These are the warriors who defeated Sludge.
Tret: Sludge? I thought I quieted him some time ago...
Laurel: He recovered while you were resting, Tret. He was gnawing at Kolima again.
Rief: He had almost destroyed the Dream Tree when we intervened.
Tret: Hrooom... And why didn't you stop him, Laurel?
Laurel: I was occupied defending the rest of the forest from his influence.
Tret: Of course... We are not what we once were... But we were talking about Isaac. What were you all going to tell me about him?
Laurel: Apparently these young humans are the children of the Warriors of Vale.
Tret: Warriors of Vale? Is that what they're calling Isaac and Ivan and Mia and...? And there was one more...
Tyrell: Yeah—Garet! Did you just forget about my dad?!
Tret: Hrooom... Yes, Garet. You're the firebrand's son, eh? What is your name?
Tyrell: I'm Tyrell.
Tret: Hmmph. Yes, I see Garet in your aura. Let's see who I see in the rest of you...

[Tret closes his eyes.]

Tret: Yes... You're all Adepts, good... You do look like the Vale warriors... Ah. You. You are Isaac's son. What is your name?
Matthew: ...
Tret: What was that? You'll have to speak up. I didn't catch your name.
Karis: He's kind of quiet. His name is Matthew.
Tret: And you are Ivan's daughter, hmmm?
Karis: Er, yes. I...I am Karis.
Tret: Looks like you've got a bit more spark than your father. Just as clever, though... Two more of you...
Rief: My name is Rief. You were a great help to my mother.
Tret: Is that so? I'd say it was the other way around.
Amiti: I am Amiti of Ayuthay. It is a great honor to make your acquaintance.
Tret: Hmph. Charmed, I'm sure. Another relative of Mia's, right?

[The others are surprised.]

Tyrell: Bwah ha ha! Wait—are you serious?
Rief: He's traveling with us, but he's from Ei-Jei in the south. He's a prince of Ayuthay Kingdom.
Tret: So you're saying he's not related to your group? His aura says otherwise.
Laurel: Let's not get distracted by trivialities right now.
Matthew: ?!
Karis: Trivialities?!
Rief: But...
Tyrell: What? What's going on?
Amiti: Could this be?
Tret: Hmph. Hope I didn't give away any family secrets...
Laurel: Please forgive Tret his bluntness. I keep having to apologize to you for the behavior of my companions. This is a topic best discussed amongst yourselves, I think. Let us change the subject.
Tret: Change the subject? Why?
Laurel: I believe we were discussing a feather of some sort.
Karis: That's right. A feather from a Mountain Roc.
Laurel: Yes, quite.
Tret: Ah, I understand.
Karis: You do? Isaac said we had to go to Kolima Forest and meet Tret.
Tret: Is that what Isaac said?
Laurel: Unfortunate...
Tyrell: What? What's unfortunate?
Laurel: It's the Mountain Roc...
Tyrell: What's the problem? You want to show your thanks, we need a feather. Simple.
Tret: No—simple is the one thing it's not, I'm afraid.
Rief: You're a tree of wisdom! Don't you know...everything? Is a feather really too much?
Karis: Clearly there's something you haven't told us.
Laurel: Well...
Tret: Hroom...
Tyrell: Out with it!
Laurel: We should tell them.
Tret: It probably won't make a difference, but yes. The roc in question...
Laurel: The Mountain Roc is sleeping. Deeply.
Tret: Very deeply.
Laurel: Such is the roc's slumber that extracting a feather as it sleeps is impossible. What's more, only a certain type of Psynergy can wake it.
Tret: Yes, and it's a Psynergy that only naturally occurs among the beastmen. It's called Slap.
Matthew: ...?
Karis: Sveta!
Rief: It must be.
Tyrell: Is THAT what she was doing?!
Amiti: Yes, that must be the Psynergy we need.
Laurel: You know an Adept capable of Slap?
Rief: Sort of, but we don't know where in Belinsk Sveta might be.
Amiti: Is Slap the only way to awaken the Mountain Roc?
Tret: Yes, but it's possible to use the Slap Glove instead of the natural ability. Last I knew, the Slap Glove was located in Belinsk. It's one of the Fang Tribe's great treasures. So that just brings you back to where you were, doesn't it?
Karis: Wait! Didn't Briggs say that Tret might know something about Belinsk Castle and its defenses? He might know something that'll help rescue Eoleo. Let's ask him!
Tret: Ask me what now? Speak up!
Rief: We need to rescue Prince Eoleo of Champa from Belinsk Castle before he's boiled alive.
Laurel: So you're asking us if there is a way to break into Belinsk's prison. Is that right?
Tret: Well?
Laurel: Is that it?
Tyrell: Well...yeah. If you want to thank us, that would do the job kinda perfectly.
Laurel: I suppose we do owe you that, but the way will not be without risk. The city's energy was depleted some time ago, which will be a problem for you...
Tret: You should first know that the front gate is essentially impossible to pass through discreetly.
Tyrell: Yeah, we were hoping you'd know some other way...
Tret: You assume a castle built on ancient ruins MUST have a secret entrance infested with traps and monsters?
Amiti: Well...yes.
Tret: Well, you're right...THIS time. There is a hidden door, but it can't be used without being powered somehow.
Laurel: If you can bring power to the door, I'm certain it will be operable by a control switch or the like.
Tret: So you'll need an object infused with magma power. Fortunately for you, we know of one.
Rief: Wonderful! What is it?
Tret: When the Mountain Roc awakens...
Amiti: Yes? When the roc awakens?
Laurel: When the great bird is roused, a shard of its power will appear. You will know it on sight.
Tret: That should be all you need to know... Just in time too... I feel a nap coming on...

[Tret snores.]

Karis: Looks like he really did fall asleep!
Tyrell: So is that it? Are we going to try to sneak into Belinsk Castle now?

Matthew:
Tyrell: I’m glad you're so relaxed. Me? I don't know if we can pull it off.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Wow! Yeah! Let's go recuse ourselves a prince!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Yeah, it's not gonna be easy, is it? But how much choice do we really have?
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: What are you yelling at me for? I'm not the one who's trying to boil the pirate!

(*Continuing*)

Karis: We need to meet up with Sveta too. I'm just not sure how this will all work...
Laurel: I do have one favor to ask of you... The reason Belinsk's ruins lie dormant is the dangerous legacy that sleeps there.
Rief: Dangerous? Like a weapon or something? Are you saying that the power was cut intentionally?
Laurel: I cannot say.
Amiti: What is this favor you spoke of?
Laurel: There is an Alchemy Dynamo in the ruins. You must not restore power to it.
Karis: How would we even do that?
Laurel: If I told you, that would bring you one step closer to activating it, so I will not share that secret.
Tyrell: Whatever. Why would we even want to turn on some dumb Dynamo? We're not turning it on, are we, Matthew?

Matthew:
Tyrell: Yeah, I knew that... I was just checking that we're all on the same page here.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Right! Definitely NOT turning it on! I like your confidence!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: What's with the hangdog look? Did you really WANT to turn on the Dynamo or something?
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Hey, this sounds serious. It's no time to just nod your head all sarcastically.

(*Continuing*)

Laurel: Excellent. I believe that you will be true to your word.
Karis: You're developing into a real leader, Matthew. I'm proud of you.
Rief: Shall we sally forth, then?
Laurel: Tret can't wish you farewell, but please accept my wish for your safe travels from both of us.

[Laurel lowers the party]

Pewter: Well, you impressed the boss lady, anyway. So congratulations! You just scored some major help in your quest thingy. ...And Laurel said something about me getting some experience in the field...

[Matthew is confused.]

Pewter: What, are you new? I'm joining your merry little band! So we're all on the same scroll? Good. Let's get going.
Text: The Venus Djinni Pewter joined you! It's set to [whomever].

-Onward!-

[On a nearby screen, Matthew is surprised by a tree with a human face sticking out of a knothole. Amiti quickly bows to it.]

Amiti: There is another tree of wisdom...
Guard: Tree of what-dom? I shouldn't even be here. I was hired as a guard by some merchants...

[We see a nearby tree with an apple hanging from it.]

Guard: I was just climbing the tree to get some of that fruit when I slipped and fell in here. I'm glad to see someone, but I don't know if you can help me. Is there someone else you can send?

[Amiti stands and rejoins you.]

-Onward!-

[Once you've used Growth and entered the tree:]
Guard: Hey! Where'd all these come from? I'm sure these vines weren't here a minute ago. Plants sure grow fast around here... I'm so glad you came! I thought I was gonna be stuck in there forever!

[He steps toward the vines, but stops.]

Guard: Oh, hey! Take this. Just my way of saying thanks.
Text: Matthew got a yew bow.

[The guard ascends the vines.]

-Onward!-

[Outside: ]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KF01: I thought I heard someone calling for help... Maybe it was the wind?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kolima Junction

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sign: West: Belinsk
East: Talon Peak
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

**********

[NOTE: You can get two different sections of dialogue here depending on which direction you go.]

[If you head west:]
???: [off-screen] So you are going to Belinsk?

[Ryu Kou and Hou Zan approach from behind.]

Ryu Kou: Did you send all the musicians back to Belinsk?
Hou Zan: It doesn't appear so.

**********

[If you head east:]
???: [off-screen] Heading to Talon Peak and the Mountain Roc?

[Ryu Kou and Hou Zan walk up.]

Ryu Kou: Without Sveta? What's the point?
Hou Zan: After all, you will need Slap Psynergy to wake the roc.

**********

[NOTE: The text is the same from this point.]

Rief: How did you know about that? Have you been following us?
Ryu Kou: That's not important now. Your goal is the Mountain Roc.
Tyrell: Don't tell us what our goals are!

[Ryu Kou and Tyrell look like they're about to fight.]

Hou Zan: Wait a moment.

[Ryu Kou holds up a pair of gloves.]

Matthew: ?!
Karis: Is that what I think it is?
Tyrell: It's gotta be, right?
Rief: That glove...
Amiti: Where did you get that?
Hou Zan: Sveta gave it to us.
Ryu Kou: It's the Slap Glove.
Tyrell: But you're not Adepts—do you even know how to use it?
Ryu Kou: Are you calling us stupid?!
Hou Zan: Now, now, let's not get upset. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement of some sort.
Karis: Are you suggesting we all team up and work together?
Hou Zan: What a bright young lady you are! Exactly.
Rief: How is it that you know so much about the Mountain Roc and the Slap Glove?
Hou Zan: We may have overheard a conversation or two with some talking trees...
Amiti: The deal you propose—you are offering the Slap Glove...in exchange for what?
Hou Zan: We want your help sneaking into Belinsk Castle.
Ryu Kou: You were going anyway, right?
Hou Zan: If you are planning to sneak in and rescue the Champan pirate, we could just go with you.
[Matthew’s party seems uncertain.]
Ryu Kou: No? Figures. Come on, Hou Zan—we're leaving.

[Ryu Kou starts walking off.]

Hou Zan: Don't be so certain, young one.
Karis: No, wait!

[Ryu Kou stops and turns.]

Tyrell: What are you doing, Karis?
Karis: Something's bothering me... I think this is actually what Sveta wanted to happen. And I think we have to play along.
Tyrell: Karis, what are you talking about?
Karis: Don't you get it? After the Teppe ruins, she left us so suddenly. And remember when we told her about the Mountain Roc? She acted differently after that. And the Slap Glove... Tret told us that it was in Belinsk, a treasure of the Fang Tribe. So if Sveta gave it to you, she must be pretty important in the Fang Tribe, right?
Ryu Kou: I-I wouldn't know.
Karis: Really? I bet you do.
Hou Zan: I have heard her called the White Deer. She is part of the Czamaral clan, the Morgal royal family.
Ryu Kou: She is sister to King Volechek.
Hou Zan: She told us you would pass through here to reach the roc, so we've been waiting for you.
Ryu Kou: She lent us the Slap Glove so you would help us break into Belinsk.
Amiti: Beyond the Slap Glove, can you offer any sort of help with our entry into Belinsk?
Hou Zan: We have some soldiers, but they're still too injured to be of any help.
Rief: Not exactly an equal partnership: you two and a glove with the five of us and our Psynergy.
Tyrell: But we need Slap Psynergy or that glove. Looks like Sveta gets her way.

Matthew:
Tyrell: Guess we're stuck doing what Sveta or Czamaral or whatever her name is wants.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: I'm glad YOU'RE excited. I'm still mad about being played for a fool.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Yeah, sometimes it really does seem like everybody knows what's going on but us, huh?
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Even if it is a trap, what else can we do? Yelling about it won't help.

(*Continuing*)

Ryu Kou: So it's decided then?

Matthew: [Yes]
Ryu Kou: Good. Let's get started, then.
[see below]
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Karis: If you need more time to decide, we understand. Where to in the meantime?
Ryu Kou: All we can do while you make up your mind is wait. Come see us when you're ready.

[When you approach them again:]
Ryu Kou: So you are going to Belinsk?

Matthew: [Yes]
Ryu Kou: Let's get started, then. We need power to use the back door into Belinsk Castle. So our next move is to face the Mountain Roc.
[see below]
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Karis: If you're still deliberating, that's fine. We'll follow your lead, whatever you decide.
[Ryu Kou repeats his response to the last "No".]

-Onward!-

(*Continuing*)

Text: Matthew got the Slap Glove.
Text: Any Adept can use the Slap Glove.

-Onward!-

Kolima Forest

[When you jump on Laurel's branch again, she lifts up the party. Matthew holds up the Slap Glove.]

Laurel: Ah, you have found the Slap Glove. Excellent. The roc sleeps atop Talon Peak, but you will not see it there. Once it becomes flesh and bone, Slap should knock it unconscious. I'm certain it will then drop a feather.

[Tret's still sleeping. Laurel lowers you again.]

-Onward!-

[Fun fact: If you use a Dream Leaf in Kolima Village, you can go back to the bog.]

Border Town

[Inn/Healer's Place:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Border Town Innkeeper: Welcome. Ready for a good night's sleep? Ah, you've got a dream leaf, so of course you are! Want to use it?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[When you use the dream leaf:]

[Inn/Healer's Place:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Border Town Innkeeper: Our son is such a piglet! Last night he'd fallen asleep, then popped awake and asked if it was breakfast time!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oven: This soup involves back-wrapped fruit that has been stewed for days... More people should eat like this.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT11: Is it time to eat yet?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT05: Last night the wife and I were bickering when our son came in and said something ridiculous. We laughed so hard that we forgot what we were fighting about! There's probably a lesson there of some kind...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[If you head into the circle of light in the basement:]
Text: Wake up from this dream?

Matthew: [Yes]
[You awaken as normal in the inn.]
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
[Nothing happens.]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Outside:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT01: Welcome to Border Town! We're sort of a cultural crossroads between the east and west.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT02: I was born and raised here, but I'm proud of how humans and beastmen work together in this town.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT04: They say the more you fight, the closer you must be... My sister and I are really close.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT03: Garrr... Aaah! I'm not mad or anything—I'm just joking around.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT06: Bilibin has a king, but I guess he's kind of weak and the queen is the real power there. I wonder what it would be like to run your own country...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT12: I've heard that Bilibin is a country ruled by a woman. I wonder what she's like... Er, please don't tell my wife what I was just saying!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT13: Welcome to Border Town! You're coming in from Morgal, right? Heading to Bilibin next?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT14: You know what's great? Humans and beastmen living and working together, that's what.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT15: My husband and I try to feed the local children when we can. It's terrible to go hungry.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BT16: My wife and I were never able to have children of our own, so we help care for our neighbors' children.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[If you head into the mist:]
Text: Wake up from this dream?

Matthew: [Yes]
[You awaken as normal in the inn.]
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
[Nothing happens.]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
