[We see a traveler approach the gate, read the sign, and ring the bell. The old man in the house wakes up.]
Gatekeeper: By my creaky bones! Do I hear visitors?!
[He stands and speaks into a device.]
Gatekeeper: Who's ringing my bell? What business have you here at my gate?!
Traveler: [off-screen] Could you please open up? I need to get through!
[The old man heads outside.]
Gatekeeper: Show your gate card. Then I'll open up for you.
[The traveler shows his card.]
Gatekeeper: OK, hang on just a second...
[He goes back inside and opens the gate, then speaks in the device again.]
Gatekeeper: Go on through.
Traveler: [off-screen] Thank you!
Gatekeeper: Good luck in your travels!
[Outside, we see the gate opening. The traveler passes through and it closes again.]

Matthew: [Yes]
[The gatekeeper comes outside.]
Gatekeeper: You've got the card! So I'll open it up!

| Konpa Cave |
[When you approach the center of a large chamber in the cave:]
Nowell: Why are Matthew and his friends taking so long to get here, Kraden? It's too dangerous to remain here much longer!
Kraden: Have patience, Nowell! They cannot come into this cavern the way we did. Your powers enabled us to directly descend into this place from the top of the ruins. I am growing worried that they won't find another way through the ruins to get here.
Nowell: We've been in infernal cavern forever! Why don't we just leave a note for them? They could take the north cave here and meet us in Bilibin. Or better yet, in Belinsk!
Kraden: We mustn't let Isaac down. Besides, who knew that we'd see a vortex down here? What a prime opportunity!
Nowell: If I may be so bold, master, you oblige people far too easily. We’re doing a lot for Isaac...
Kraden: Isaac and I go back a long way. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for that fine fellow. Now what ARE you doing up there, Rief?
Rief: Nowell made me scout out the route to the north tunnel. I know better than to disagree with her! I'm glad I caught up with you. Otherwise I would have missed seeing this vortex... It's... so... spellbinding...
Nowell: Wake up, Rief! It's pulling you in!
[Rief jumps back in surprise and lands on his bottom.]
Nowell: You got too close!
Rief: I'm...all out...of breath!
Kraden: Most curious...
Nowell: Master Kraden has warned us before!
Kraden: Hmm? Oh, yes! I've warned you before, Rief!
Rief: But I only looked at it! And it drew me in!
Nowell: It doesn't matter! You scared us silly!
Kraden: Indeed you did. However...
Nowell: Master, what is it? Did you observe something new?
Kraden: Yes, Nowell. Didn't you hear it? When the vortex pulsed, I heard the sound of a machine starting.
[Nowell looks at something.]
Kraden: What is it, Nowell?
Nowell: Well what about that machine right there?
Kraden: I've never seen such a strange device in all my life! I wonder what it is? We must examine it more closely!
Nowell: Please stay where you are, master. I'll climb down there.
[Nowell walks over and climbs down a vine. After making one jump, a dart crosses in front of her face and lands on the wall next to her. Matthew and co. turn and prepare to fight as three people covered in armor land behind them.]
Kraden: Our friends are here! But who are THEY?!
Matthew: !!!
Tyrell: Who do you think you are, creeping up behind us?!
Karis: We'll settle that later, Tyrell! They're armed for a fight!
[After the fight:]
Kraden: You arrived in the nick of time, my young friends!
Karis: I'm sorry we kept you waiting so long, Kraden!
Kraden: Ah! You two must be Matthew's friends, Karis and Tyrell!
Karis: That's me, sir!
Tyrell: None other!
Kraden: Well, I commend all of you! Making it through the ruins must have been hard for you.
Tyrell: Yeah, the ruins were huge! Why didn't you come up and help us out?
Nowell: Well, that's a fine way to talk to Master Kraden! He's gone to a lot of trouble to get here!
Kraden: Come now, Nowell. We owe them thanks for coming when they did! Or else you, Rief, and I might have fallen prey to those shadowy fiends! We’re very grateful that you leapt to our defense!
[Matthew’s group looks up and notices that Rief has vanished.]
Karis: Matthew is being a little shy. We were glad to help out... But... Where IS your other student?
Kraden: Rief has gone missing!
Nowell: It's true! Rief is gone!
[Someone only identified as ??? speaks. His portrait is shaded, but what we can see looks like he's wearing a scarf. To distinguish him for the sake of this script, we'll call him Scarf Guy for now.]
Scarf Guy: [off-screen] The rumors ARE true! These Adepts from Vale are already quite powerful. We didn't want to reveal ourselves THIS soon. But you've seen that machine, so...
Kraden: Who are you? Have you taken Rief from us? Show yourself!
[Someone with a different portrait also identified as ??? speaks. He doesn't have much for distinguishing marks in the shadowsand totally doesn't already look familiar, so we'll call him Creeper for now.]
Creeper: [off-screen] There are two of us watching, Kraden. My ally doesn't know you. But I do, and you're feisty as ever. You've hardly changed in 30 years. You got a heavy dose of Psynergy from the lighthouse, didn't you?
Kraden: How can you know that? Who are you?! Show yourselves! Now, villains!
Creeper: [off-screen] Don't pout, old friend. You'll find out. Now, you might be wondering: where IS that student of yours?
Nowell: Where have you two taken Rief?!
Creeper: [off-screen] I'll answer that in my own sweet time. First, tell me, Matthew...
[Matthew’s whole group seems surprised.]
Creeper: [off-screen] You've been entrusted with the Glyph Book, haven't you!
Scarf Guy: [off-screen] WHAT?! That kid?! How could he?!
Creeper: [off-screen] Please, let him speak! I'm positive that he can read the ancient symbols now. But your response, son of Vale?
Matthew:
Karis: That gave it away, Matthew! We should have kept the book a secret from them!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: That gave it away, Matthew! We should have kept your book a secret from these guys!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: That spilled the beans, Matthew! We should have kept your book a secret from them!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: That gave it away, Matthew! We should have kept your book a secret from them!
(*Continuing*)
Creeper: [off-screen] You can't hide secrets from a masked man. His glimmer of honesty just saved your lives.
Kraden: What is this Glyph Book you speak of? Do you mean to take it by force?
Scarf Guy: [off-screen] That old friend of yours doesn't have a CLUE, does he? Now, that one there... That's Matthew, right?
[Kraden and Nowell are shown looking around for them.]
Scarf Guy: [off-screen] Oh, they're STILL in the dark about who we are! Let's throw this pack of dogs a bone already!
[They come down on a scaffolding along with two soldiers and an unconscious Rief. The lurkers are given identification at this point. Scarf Guy is now Blados and Creeperwho really isn't looking familiar is now Masked Man.]
Blados: Hello down there, little bugs! Don't worry. We won't squash you! Not if you continue through the caves.
Kraden: What...? The caves?
Nowell: We're not going anywhere! Give me my brother back!
Blados: THIS twerp? We're going to boot him out one of the cave exits!
Nowell: What do you mean?! B-b-boot him out?!
Blados: If I were you, I'd hurry to that exit. He'll be tied up—an easy snack for passing beasts!
Kraden: You're dropping him outside at the north cave exit?
Blados: You know there isn't just one exit. There are two. And Rief might be at the north end—or the south!
Kraden: Of course, of course... There's an exit to the north... And one to the south, near Harapa.
Blados: YES! Two exits! One Kraden! But maybe the spawn of the so-called Warriors of Vale would help you out!
Matthew: ?!
Karis: What's he going on about?
Tyrell: Is he talking about us?!
Masked Man: My eager associate is saying exactly that. Head to the southern exit, near the town of Harapa.
Matthew: ???
Karis: Why do we have to go there?
Tyrell: We want to go north! Not down south!
Blados: HA! You'll find out soon enough!
Masked Man: Suffice it to say that you've got to help your little Rief. Isn't that reason enough?
Kraden: I'm responsible for Rief! I have to get him back!
Blados: I'm sure he'll be safe and sound if you stand here jabbering, old man! Yap, yap, yap!
Karis: Big talk for someone who said he wasn't looking for a fight!
Blados: I'm ITCHING for a good fight! And it would be entertaining to fillet you right here!
Masked Man: Now, now, Blados. They kept their promise. You keep yours.
Blados: I know my promise. And my duty. Then let's leave these dogs to chase their tails!
[They rise in the scaffold. Partway up it pauses.]
Masked Man: Go, Kraden. You too, children of Vale's infamous warriors. We'll drop off Rief at one of the two exits...
[It finishes going up.]
Kraden: Wait—I know your voice, don't I...?
Nowell: Whoever they are, they're gone.
Kraden: If only I hadn't been distracted by that machine! Then I wouldn't have lost track of Rief!
Nowell: You're a scholar, master. You can't be blamed! It is entirely MY fault!
Kraden: But what are they after? Could it have anything to do with what's happening at Sol Sanctum?
Nowell: Master, we can't linger.
Kraden: Yes, we must find Rief! Hopefully he'll be at the north cave exit!
[Kraden and Nowell head toward their exit.]
Kraden: My friends! We will take up our quest for the feather once we have reunited!
Matthew: ...!
Karis: I guess we have no choice! Those fiends are forcing us to split up for now!
Tyrell: See you later, gramps.
Kraden: But I'm afraid that I have more unfortunate news for you, friends. This Psynergy Vortex has complicated things further. For after you search the south exit for Rief, you cannot follow us through this chamber. This vortex nearly pulled in our Rief, and by the time you return, it will surely be even bigger. No, once you emerge from your exit, you must travel north, scaling over the Khiren Mountains. Going over the Khiren Mountains is difficult, but I am positive that you can do it. Once you come down the other side of the mountains, meet us in Belinsk, the capital of Morgal. For it is in Belinsk that we will find clues to whereabouts of the Mountain Roc. If you find Rief first, keep him safe and sound. We'll see you soon.
Nowell: But with any luck, we'll find him first!
[Nowell and Kraden leave.]
Tyrell: They're gone. Now how did our quest for the feather get off track THAT easily?!
Karis: I wonder why Blados and his soldiers attacked us? And who was the masked man with them? It seemed that he and Kraden knew each other.
Tyrell: Who knows?! We were getting so close to that feather! Or at least close to Belinsk... But when bad luck hits, you just have to roll with the punches.
Karis: What a surprisingly positive thing for you to say, Tyrell. I'm more used to you kicking and screaming when fate throws you for a loop.
Tyrell: Well, one of us has to be the grown-up here.
Karis: Very funny. But let's hurry. Rief might be in real danger at the Harapa exit!
Tyrell: I guess that means we're headed to the Ei-Jei region. Never thought I'd see the south coast of Angara!
Matthew:
Karis: I'm with you! We're like the Warriors of Vale, exploring all of Angara!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: I'm with Matthew! We're like the Warriors of Vale, exploring places we've never gone before!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: You should be more excited! We're like the Warriors of Vale, exploring all of Angara!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: Well, I'm sort of excited. We're like the Warriors of Vale, exploring all of Angara!
(*Continue*)
Tyrell: I don't plan on seeing much of Ei-Jei if I can help it. Let's just finish our search, then get over those mountains.
Karis: There's no telling if those brutes even dropped off Rief at our end! But we have to hurry!
-Onward!-
[When Matthew enters the southernmost chamber, two soldiers flip switches that set off two fuses. They hit some rocks and cause a loud and long series of explosions, followed by a crash. After the dust clears, we see the door is blocked.]
Matthew: !!!
Karis: We walked right into their trap!
Tyrell: They tricked us!
Blados: [off-screen] Well, I did trick you. But this is NO trap. You're free to go!
Tyrell: Then why ambush us, coward?!
Blados: What, is it a crime to come say good-bye? We're just sad to see such GREAT warriors be on their way, that's all.
Karis: Never mind Blados! If he's here, I'm sure Rief must be around somewhere.
Blados: Smart girl. Maybe even as smart as your father, Ivan!
Matthew: ...?
Tyrell: I don't like the way that guy's talking about Karis. It's like he knows her.
Karis: What do you mean, smart as my father?!
Blados: Just that you MIGHT be a worthy adversary someday. Now get out of here. Or else I'll bring this whole place down!
-Onward!-
[Matthew and company exit the cave and start looking around outside. They hear the hopping effect and turn to see a crate jumping its way down the path.]
Tyrell: Look! A crate! Uh...and it's hopping.
Karis: Should we open it? It's so bizarre!
Matthew:
Tyrell: OK, if you think it's safe, let's do it.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Yeah, let's do it! Crack it open!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Come on...I really want to know what's in that thing!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Tyrell: Focus your fury on that crate and crack it open!
(*Continuing*)
[They jump forward and the crate falls open, revealing the tied-up Rief. After a moment, he falls over backwards.]
Matthew: ?!
Karis: Hey, it's Rief!
Tyrell: I guess we headed out the right exit after all. We found him!
[Fade to black. It returns to them all standing near the cave. Rief is conscious, standing, and not tied up now.]
Tyrell: You're lucky we got to you in time, Rief!
Rief: I don't think I could have stood that a second longer! It was like a coffin!
Karis: Kraden and Nowell were terribly worried when you vanished!
Rief: Then let's hurry and catch up with them!
Blados: [off-screen] I hope you weren't planning on going north through the caves!
[Blados is standing on the cliffs with his group of soldiers.]
Blados: Because you can't use the cave route now that I've collapsed the entrance! I've trapped you in the southwest corner of Angara—in a cage of monumental proportions! You've emerged on the other side of the Goma Mountains, so there's no going home... And you're stuck below the Khiren Mountains, with little hope of crossing over them!
Rief: You again?! Stop this nonsense! Why are you tormenting us?
Blados: Nonsense? Oh, there's a lot of sense behind all this. Not that I'll tell YOU fools.
Tyrell: I don't understand! Who are you guys?!
Blados: Now you're starting to ask the right questions.
Karis: I'm fed up with this! You're toying with us!
Blados: You're lucky I've been given orders to let you live. Until you've played your parts, that is.
Tyrell: What? Did he just say... play our parts?
Karis: I think he just let something slip, don't you?
Matthew:
Blados: Don't look so smug. I didn't mean for that to slip out. But you'll be crying for mercy once you get what it really means!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Blados: Oh, don't celebrate too much. That was just a slip of the tongue. You don't really know anything!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Blados: Oh, I won't take pity on you... I won't give up any more secrets. One slip of the tongue is enough.
--------------------------
Matthew:
Blados: Yell all you want. You're not going to get anything more out of me than that little slip of the tongue.
(*Continuing*)
Blados: You're locked into your fate. There's only one way to escape the Ei-Jei region. And that passage is over the Khiren Mountains. Far too treacherous for you!
[Blados and the soldiers start using grappling hooks to scale the cliff and leave, but Blados stops.]
Blados: Farewell, children of Vale's greatest warriors. Know that you've had the honor of facing Blados! Just be glad you didn't meet my sword!
[He ascends the cliff and leaves.]
Rief: I guess we've got no choice. He's trapped us in Ei-Jei!
Tyrell: But we need to reach Belinsk!
Rief: But Blados did say there's another way – going north over the Khiren Mountains.
Karis: He did say that it'd be a difficult climb though.
Tyrell: It probably is...for HIM. Did you see all those dumb cables they use to get around?
Rief: Still, we should proceed carefully, Tyrell.
Karis: That's not Tyrell's strong suit.
Tyrell: What could be so difficult about taking some passage over the mountains?
Rief: Taking the passage north isn't as straightforward as you'd think.
Karis: This is the first time we've been to this part of Angara. I'm scared we'll get lost.
Tyrell: Don't be such a worrywart, Karis. We'll be up and over those mountains in no time!
Matthew:
Karis: You're not concerned that we're going to get lost, Matthew? Well, maybe we'll be fine...
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: You're not worried that we're going to get lost, Matthew? You're starting to convince even me!
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: You sound just as worried about our situation, Matthew...
--------------------------
Matthew:
Karis: You sound just as frustrated with our predicament, Matthew...
(*Continuing*)
Rief: I've traveled this area with Kraden. There's a town south of here near the coast that we should go to first.
Tyrell: So you know which way to head next then, Rief? You could have said something earlier.
Karis: I say we head straight for that town! Let's get our bearings before we go over the mountains!
Tyrell: There she goes again. Pushing us around...
Karis: What?! I know full well that Matthew is our leader. I just figured he'd want some input!
Tyrell: Fine, then. Let's move out before Karis blows a gasket.
Rief: So, may I take it that you're all right with me traveling with you? I would suggest that we head to that town!
Text: Rief joined your party.

[Someone with a different portrait also identified as ??? speaks. He doesn't have much for distinguishing marks in the shadows

Scarf Guy is now Blados and Creeper

-Onward!-
