[When you exit the third screen:]
Unseen Parent: Hang in there, Son!
[We see a small child hanging off the edge of a broken bridge stuck to a wind blossom while his father is on the other side. A large Psynergy Vortex is nearby.]
Son: Dad! This thing isn't going to hold me forever!
Dad: Somebody! Please! Find me a Wind Adept!
[Matthew approaches.]
-Onward!-
| Carver's Camp |
[Talking to people:]
Dad: I heard that a Wind Adept was coming this way with her friends. Is that you?
Matthew: [Yes]
Dad: I thought so! An old man who was waiting at the bridge said you'd be coming this way. He was terribly sorry that he could do nothing to help. But he insisted my son would be safe until you could get here with your Psynergy. Please, help!
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Dad: No? There was an old man waiting here for them. He was sorry that he could do nothing to help. But he did promise that a Wind Adept would soon arrive who could rescue him!
Dad: My son...! My poor son! We'd just come from Bilibin to visit the Goma Highlands when THIS happened! Please, can you do anything to save him?
Worker 1: I thought we made that bridge pretty strong, but that Psynergy Vortex tore it apart!
Worker 2: What are we going to do?! We can't fix the bridge! It's a total disaster!
[If you save the kid (yes, if. It's optional):]
[Whirlwind lifts the flower and the child lands safely on the other side.]
Son: Thanks for the lift! I would have been a goner without you! But Dad, what are YOU going to do?
Dad: I'll meet you back in Bilibin...somehow!
Son: What should I tell Mom? She'll be worried sick!
Dad: Just tell her that I'm finding some other way back. I'll be fine!
Son: OK, I'll run home as fast as I can and let her know!
Dad: You do that. You'll make it home through the valley in plenty of time before dark.
Son: OK, Dad! See you back in Bilibin!
[The kid heads off.]
Dad: Thanks again, kind strangers. You don't see true heroism very often these days... You wouldn't happen to be Matthew, would you?
[Matthew nods.]
Dad: We met an old man before the accident who asked if we'd seen a party of young adventurers. He asked me to give you a message: With the bridge out, you'll need to cross the Goma Mountains a different way.
[We see a path leading out to the south.]
Dad: He's scouting out the alternate route and wants you to meet him there, in the caves below some nearby ruins. He wanted me to point you in the direction of the ruins, down that path just to the south. At least, I think that's what the old man said. OK, good-bye. Maybe I'll see you out east in Bilibin someday. I wish we had more nice people there—like you!
[The dad walks off.]
-Onward!-
[Whenever you walk by Carver, talk to him, or start heading toward the entrance:]
Carver: Look who's here! It's Isaac's son! Come hunting vortexes like your dad, Matthew?
[We see a shot of the vortex right by the broken bridge.]
Carver: This vortex is the worst I've seen in a long time. It's torn my camp apart!
Worker 1: This one's the worst one I've EVER seen, Carver.
Carver: Isaac has warned you about these Psynergy Vortexes, right?
Matthew: [Yes]
Carver: What?! You've even seen another huge one near the Tanglewood?
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Carver: What?! That can't be! All your parents have been watching out for the vortexes for years!
(*Continuing*)
Worker 1: These vicious suckers are pretty rare.
Worker 2: I've never seen a vortex any bigger than a stump before. But this one is a monster!
Worker 1: Maybe they're following you!
Worker 2: You brought this one here!
Tyrell: You trying to pick a fight?!
Karis: Don’t be stupid!
Carver: Oh, settle down, everyone! No one brings the vortexes. They pop up every 10 years!
Worker 2: I guess I do remember this happening 10 years ago. But I was just a kid then.
Carver: Yes, indeed. And their parents are trying to figure out why this keeps happening. And if they're getting THIS big again, then something worse is brewing near Mount Aleph.
Worker 1: So, the vortexes are plaguing the whole world then? Those holes chug down Psynergy, so I bet they're throwing Weyard's elemental balance out of whack.
Worker 2: So...IT'S coming back.
Carver: The Mourning Moon? Not necessarily. The Mourning Moon won't emerge if this outbreak of vortexes can be stopped.
Worker 1: Well, who can stop even ONE of those things?!
Worker 2: Hopefully that old Alchemist, Kraden, is looking into it. He swang through here earlier.
Karis: Kraden, did you say?
Tyrell: We were supposed to meet Kraden here!
Carver: Were you the ones Kraden was meeting with? Because he... Hold on...what's happening NOW?!
[The vortex looks like it’s about to grow, but suddenly shrinks.]
Carver: It shrank!
Matthew: ...!
Tyrell: Um, I feel queasy.
Karis: We've seen that before!
[The workers start moving up the platform.]
Worker 2: Hey, where are you going?! Trying to figure out a way past the vortex to the other side?
Worker 1: We have to check on the rest of the camp. Maybe the gondolas can get us past it.
Carver: Well then, hop to it, men! No vortex is going to get the best of ME.
[Carver heads up, followed by Matthew and company. After a short time lapse, Carver is checking out the gondola.]
Carver: I'm not so sure about this gondola. But what do you think? Any hope for this old thing?
[The worker checks it out.]
Worker 1: I think this gondola is on its last legs...
Carver: Are you sure?
[Suddenly, it falls apart.]
Worker 1: Well, I'm sure NOW.
Carver: Good thing that didn't happen while riding it!
[They head toward the other one.]
Carver: How about this one then?
Worker 2: Not sure. Same thing could happen, for all I know.
Carver: Not sure? What kind of assessment is that?!
Worker 2: It's shaky. I doubt it'll support anyone's weight for long.
Worker 1: That bad, huh?
Worker 2: It might hold together. But just barely.
Carver: Barely? That's better than nothing.
[Carver gets closer to the gondola.]
Worker 2: Hang on, Carver... You're not actually going to ride it, are you?
Carver: With a little elbow grease and some Psynergy...
Worker 1: Not another one of your crazy schemes, Carver...
Carver: And you call yourself a lumberjack! Come on, show some gumption!
Worker 2: Don't chance it. That thing's too rickety!
Carver: Hmm. I'll need a LOT of speed. It'll start falling to pieces right after I start riding it... As soon as I get on, you two use Grip Psynergy at the same time to give it a good yank!
Worker 1: Hmm, pretty clever.
Worker 2: But what if that doesn't do the trick?
Carver: It will! Grip the machine with everything you've got!
Worker 1: But you DO know that this will finish off the gondola, right?
Carver: What other choice do I have? I need to get over there to see how the other side of the camp is faring!
Worker 1: I know, but...
Worker 2: It's too reckless...
Carver: Are you two going to help or not?
Worker 1: Fine. I'll help.
Worker 2: Me too. But if this goes wrong, don't say we didn't warn you!
[It fades to black and shows them in position.]
Tyrell: Well, I don't know about you, but I'm in awe of Carver.
Karis: Of course you would say that. I'm surprised you didn't volunteer for his crazy plan.
Carver: Watch this, kids. This is about to get REAL interesting. All right, men, get ready!
[He sits in the gondola.]
Carver: Hurry it up!
[The workers face him.]
Worker 1: Grip it!
[They both use Grip Psynergy and there are snapshots of them pulling him into the gap.]
Worker 2: Good luck, Carver!
[They smash into it and send him flying to the other side.]
Tyrell: Woo-hoo! I can't believe it! Carver made it across!
[Karis seems unhappy.]
Tyrell: What's wrong now, Karis?
Karis: Sure, he made it. But he broke the gondola completely!
Tyrell: Now we have NO way to get to the only valley that cuts through the Goma Mountains! So once we find Kraden, how will we go to Bilibin and Morgal beyond to get that feather?!
Worker 1: Were you guys planning to travel to Bilibin on the other side of the mountains?
Matthew: [Yes]
Worker 1: You can still reach Bilibin. There's another route.
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Worker 1: Well, most people who come through here are. Few know that there's a second, ancient route.
(*Continuing*)
Worker 1: The caves under the Konpa ruins go under the Goma Mountains and then branch in two directions... The caves come up both in the north near Bilibin and down south in the bottom half of Angara. So if you're that eager to reach Bilibin, I'd find those caves and use the north branch.
Worker 2: There's just one problem. A gate bars the way to the ruins. You need a pass to get through. But you can get a pass from the Psynergy Training Grounds at Patcher's Place. Good thing you look like a smart bunch of Adepts. You'll need your Psynergy to make your way through the Konpa ruins to the caves below!
-Onward!-
[If you take the southern exit without saving the kid:]
Worker: Hang on there! You're Matthew, aren't you? You look a lot like your dad- and everyone knows HIM. Anyway, I just wanted to pass on a message. An old man came by the bridge and tried to help that father and son. I think his name was...Kraden? He was a bit flustered, but once he made sure that child was OK for the time being, he asked me to keep an eye out for you, Matthew. Kraden said that since the bridge has been wrecked, he wants to meet you somewhere else. Go to the caves under the Konpa ruins. It's the only way left through the mountains, he said. So, there it is. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes though. The Konpa ruins are perilous. Good luck out there. See you around!
[Outside:]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worker 1: Want to hear about the alternate way past the Goma range again?
Matthew: [Yes]
Worker 1: Far below the Konpa ruins is a sprawling series of caves. They cut under the Goma Mountains and then branch into both the north and south of Angara. But the caves are supposed to be hard to reach from the ruins. And even harder to survive.
--------------------------
Matthew: [No]
Worker 1: Oh no? Hmm, I hope you find your way past the Goma Mountains somehow. These vortexes can make travel nearly impossible!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Worker 2: We lumberjacks can cross these kinds of chasms by just chopping down a tree! Timmmm...BER! But you can't make yourselves a bridge! Not with those whittling tools you call weapons. You'll have to find a detour!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CL01: The ancients made the gondolas and used them to travel all over the place, or so they say. We're glad to have them, but we have no idea how to repair any that get broken!

CL02: The new country of Bilibin might have had a chance of being a decent place... if those horrible McCoy people weren't governing it.
